Founding Director, IFChina Original Studio & Participatory Documentary Center
Aiming to actively engage ordinary citizens in documenting their own lives, Jian is an internationally recognized independent filmmaker and artist currently based in Southeast China’s Jiangxi Province. His documentaries and feature films, which reveal the social and cultural tensions of contemporary China, have won international awards and have been shown in theaters, universities, and museums worldwide. He directed the critically acclaimed films Super, Girls! and Bamboo Shoot, and co-founded the groundbreaking China Village Documentary Project, in which 10 ordinary villagers from across China documented the changing rural dynamics in their home towns with video cameras. He is also the founder of IFChina Original Studio and the Participatory Documentary Center at Jinggangshan University, one of the nation’s first creative civic engagement centers, focusing on collecting, archiving and sharing social memories and promoting local culture.
