Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution; Chairman, Open Society Foundation
As a Senior Fellow at Brookings, Hakan Altinay works on issues of normative frameworks for an interdependent world. His book, Global Civics, was published in 2011, and reflects work conducted when he was a Yale World Fellow in 2009. Previously, Altinay was the Executive Director of Turkey’s Open Society Foundation. In that role, he encouraged Turkey’s evolution toward a more open society by focusing on European Union accession and the aspirations of the middle class. He helped found the Independent Commission on Turkey, a high-level body which contributed to the EU’s decision to open membership negotiations with Turkey, as well as several think tanks and advocacy groups dedicated to reform agendas in the social, educational, and judicial spheres.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Open Society Foundation.
