Senior Fellow, United States Institute of Peace

Imtiaz Ali is currently pursuing research on the radicalization of the Pashtun people in Pakistan's tribal region, the nature of the Taliban insurgency in Pakistan, and its connection with the Afghan Taliban, as well as with local and global terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda. Previously, Ali was a special correspondent for the Washington Post in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province. He joined the BBC Pashto Service in 2001 and reported extensively on the rise of the "Pakistani Taliban" and Pakistan's military operations against al-Qaeda operatives and their local Taliban supporters in the tribal region. Before joining the BBC, Ali worked for Pakistan's premier English-language newspapers, The News and Dawn. Ali joined U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Ambassador Richard Holbrooke’s fact-finding visit to Pakistan in June 2009, and in July 2009, he testified before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Sub-committee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs.
