Human Resources Frequently Asked Questions

Here's where you'll find answers to FAQs regarding benefits and general human resources information. These columns are written by Benefits specialists and Human Resource generalists for the Yale Community.

Ask the Benefits Specialist:

I've heard about a benefit that will help me escape the high cost of gas and let someone else do the driving. How can I sign up?

Enroll through Yale's Benefits Office to purchase your transit ticket/pass online through ADP's Online Commuter Benefits (OCB) Program. By using pre-tax dollars from your pay, you will receive a savings on your transit expenses up to the IRS limit of $115 a month. Plus, your ticket/pass will be mailed directly to you. Transit riders also receive three free daily parking permits per month, and can take advantage of a Guaranteed Ride Home Program (www.yale.edu/parkingandtransit/alternatives/GuaranteedRideHome.htm)

Those who park off-campus can also take advantage of pre-tax savings—up to $220/month—for their monthly parking costs. For more information, visit www.yale.edu/hronline/benefits/TransitBenefit.html

Ask The Generalist

It is goal-setting season in Yale's performance management program, FOCUS. In order to set workplace goals, staff may need some information and direction.

What is a goal?

A goal is not what you do on the job, but what you achieve. It's a tangible result, not an aspiration.

How can my HR Generalist help me set goals?

Your HR Generalist can help by working with you on setting goals that are SMART, which means goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-framed. You can make an appointment with your generalist to have a working goal-setting meeting and/or go to the FOCUS website at www.yale.edu/hronline/focus/goal.html.
