Fire Prevention: Safe and Sound Fair

Did you know that there are four basic classes of fire? Do you know what PASS means? These are just some of the questions that Yale Deputy Fire Inspector Ralph Marguy, Fire Inspector Ryan Dudley, and New Haven Fire Marshall Joe Capucci answered at the recent "Safe and Sound Fair" on fire safety conducted in the Commons Dining Hall for dining services staff across campus. Each one-hour session focused on the use of fire extinguishers and general fire safety. Participants learned, for example, that the four types of fire are (A)combustibles such as wood, cloth, and paper; (B) flammable liquids such as gasoline and oil; (C) energized electrical equipment; and (D) flammable metals. Most of the fire extinguishers on campus are multi-purpose ABC and can be used on most fires.

Participants of the fair also learned the meaning of the acronym P.A.S.S. pertaining to fire extinguishers. P.A.S.S. means: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle to the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side.
