The first annual Sustainability Awards were handed out to Yale staff members Brenda Naegel (left), Procurement, Ginger Chapman, Construction and Renovations, and Ben Holder, Custodial Services, and Green Cleaning Committee (chair). |
The first Yale Sustainability Awards were presented to several staff members and students at a breakfast held in the President's Room of Woolsey Hall on April 1 of the Summit. The purpose of these awards is to recognize the "exemplary efforts made by members of the Yale community to advance the sustainability of the University" for the year 2007-2008. The University plans on continuing these awards and next year will have a formal, online nomination process so that recipients can be nominated by the broader Yale community. The following is a list of this year's awards and their recipients.
Yale Custodial Services and the Green Cleaning Committee for their effort in facilitating a smooth and successful transition to "green" cleaning supplies. Thanks to them, about 94% of custodial products are now eco-friendly. Committee members are: Ben Holder (Chair), Marilena Stephens, Georgetta Sheppard, Bea Lytle-Martin, Paul Catalano, Jerry Irizarry, Nick Celone, and Rob Daly.
Brenda Naegel, associate director of Communications and Training, Yale Procurement, for her tireless effort in advancing sustainability in Procurement. Brenda has led the way in developing environmentally preferable purchasing guidelines and has contributed to the long-term sustainability of the University by working to integrate sustainable principles with Yale's purchasing activities.
Virginia Chapman, director of Construction and Renovations, YSM Facilities, for her leadership on the Medical campus in helping to make LEED-certified building standards a priority. With her guidance, numerous YSM facilities have been renovated using LEED standards, and many more are underway. Two labs, C-Wing third floor and I-Wing first floor, along with the Amistad building, currently hold Gold status, with Hunter 6 and LSOG's certification pending.
STEP (Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnership) Leaders Kate Gasner and John Hinkle, for their work in building partnerships between student and staff sustainability efforts campus-wide.
