  • In August, Yale Dining Services, in conjunction with the HR Organizational Development and Learning Center, launched a new program called Advanced Culinary Training, which provides training in international cuisine for Yale chefs. During the first training session, held August 11-15, participants focused on new food preparation and flavor dynamics, creating such mouth-watering dishes as tuna fish with cumin gazpacho sauce, red snapper in coconut, ginger, and lemon sauce, and spicy eggplant in garlic sauce. Future training sessions will focus on even more culturally sophisticated, epicurean delights.

  • Welcoming nearly 50 business office staff for a behind-the-scenes tour and informative "quick hit" presentations, Yale University Procurement hosted an Open House on August 5. In addition to the opportunity to meet Procurement staff, attendees learned how contracts are negotiated, how purchase orders and invoices are processed and what goes into making procurement systems work effortlessly. While the event had a light-hearted "luau" theme, the event pursued a "gold" sustainable event standard using biodegradable food ware, local produce and cheeses, and encouraged attendees to leave their cars behind. Guests reported that they enjoyed their time learning more about procurement at Yale.

  • The Yale University African-American Affinity Group (YAAA) was a recent benefactor to a widely-successful New Haven community youth-golf program founded by Yale senior Christine Nguyen '09 and integrated by The Dixwell-Yale Community Center into their Summer Learning Program. The University provided space on its private, outdoor course, and in the Payne-Whitney gym for rainy days, with other Yale departments offering support. YAAA helped with the children's lessons, and in conjunction with the HR Office of Diversity and Inclusion provided T-shirts and participant trophies and hosted the ending banquet. Future coordination of the program will now reside with YAAA, which plans to include mentoring and scholarship opportunities for program graduates. To find out more about YAAA—which in August sponsored "Finance 911 for You and Your Family," hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist and former CNN Business Anchor Valerie Coleman Morris—go to www.yale.edu/yaaa.
