systems biology
The Yale Systems Biology Institute (YSBI) provides an interdisciplinary and cutting edge research environment for laboratories focusing on the biology of regulatory networks. Regulation is what distinguishes living organisms from other non-living natural systems, and the regulatory network is thus the core for a fundamental understanding of life and disease alike. A major focus of the YSBI is the biology of gene regulatory networks that underlie the identity and life of cells. The institute seeks to bridge research communities at Yale from different specialties that share a common vision about the need to integrate mechanistic molecular knowledge into a comprehensive understanding of an organism’s function, disease and evolution.
Systems Biology focuses on complex interactions in biological systems and characterizes the
organizational principles that unite living systems. One focal area of particular relevance to Yale
researchers involves dynamic gene regulatory networks, which provide a springboard for the
integration of mathematical theory and bioinformatics. The creation of a Systems Biology
Institute at the YWC provides a generative focus for the research interests of faculty in the
physical and biological sciences, and for topics ranging from molecules to whole organisms.
Professor Gunter Wagner (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) chairs the faculty advisory
committee, which is actively identifying areas of concentration that will best leverage Yale’s
strengths and facilitate key recruitments. Professor Wagner has already demonstrated his firm
belief in the power of the YWC to advance Yale science by moving his entire laboratory to
Building B-31.
