chemical biology
The Yale Chemical Biology Institute will provide a uniquely diverse and interdisciplinary environment for laboratories at the very frontier of this burgeoning field. Indeed, the pharmaceutical heritage of the West Campus, with its highly advanced infrastructure and sophisticated instrumentation, makes it a natural site for research at the interface between chemistry and biology. Researchers in the Institute will capitalize on chemical sequence space to explore biology and exploit biological diversity to expand chemistry.
The Institute will emphasize research in two intertwined sub-fields that are essential for discovery and translation: synthetic biology, which is concerned with programming cells and organisms with new functions, and natural (and non-natural) products biosynthesis, which seeks to understand the myriad ways that small molecules control and are controlled by complex biological networks. Members of the institute will interact extensively with faculty within BioDesign as well as the Institutes for Microbial Diversity and Cancer and Systems Biology, and will benefit immensely from the RNAi, Genome Analysis, and Small Molecule Discovery technology cores.
