Girl-Empowered Magazine (GEM) provides female New Haven high school students with a positive forum for exploring their young womanhood in writing. Young women from Yale are grouped with students from local high schools who are interested in women's issues and writing. In addition to weekly discussion meetings with the high schoolers, Yalies help the girls to write, edit, and produce a magazine about women's issues. Rape and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) is a student organization that works closely with students and the administration to improve Yale's policies towards sexual violence and rape and to make the system as efficient, effective, and supportive as possible. It helps advertise this system and also aims to promote understanding and support for survivors; for instance, RSVP coordinates the annual Take Back the Night ceremony on campus. Yale Belly Dance Society is a group dedicated to Middle Eastern dance and dance culture. Our current focus is on Egyptian and American cabaret-style, but we also learn about other styles including raqs sharqui, folkloric, and Tribal (ATS) styles. We hold performances, classes, cultural events and open workshops throughout the year. Yale Men Against Rape (YMAR) is a group of men working to educate themselves and other men about rape and sexual assault. YMAR regularly gives a 45 minute presentation that teaches men how to help a survivor, should a friend ask them for help, and educates men about the realities of rape and sexual assault in the United States and at Yale, including what men can do to help prevent them. Ya!Lesbians is a primarily undergraduate social group for lesbian, bisexual, queer and questioning women. The group hosts parties, happy hours, pre-Co-op Dance mixers, and movie nights. Queer Women at Yale is a group for all LGBTQ identified women and their allies throughout the university. It operates through a community email list, where members can plan parties, have discussions, announce events, and otherwise communicate to Queer Women at Yale.
