Paul WF1G held the W1YU callsign.
Hello all!
This is an update of the activities for W1YU as of late - since the first of October, transmissions have been relatively quiet due to a heavy work load. However, this last weekend was the annual Miramar Air Show where the Marine Corps opens its gates and hangars and shares with the interested public ( numbering in the high 100,000s) the planes that fly the skies - everything from helicopters to the Blue Angels. The local ARES group was responsible for helping the Marine Corps hosts to find lost children and help communicate for those that need immediate care (heat stroke, baby delivery, etc.). There were 30+ volunteers serving more than 900 volunteer hours. W1YU stood as standby for hospital relay on Saturday for 8 hours should any major, mass casualty event occur. Thankfully, nothing of the sort happened.
This coming weekend, W1YU will help provide runner tracking and race communications for the annual San Diego 100 mile run. This is a run that spans 36 hours from Saturday morning through the night to Sunday morning. There are 60 or so runners that are so well trained that they can run 100 miles in rough terrain and weather conditions and for 24-26 hours straight. An impressive group of people - my hat goes off to them! The amateur radio operators make sure that all runners check in at each check point so that we don't have anyone lost in the desert terrain or in the dark. W1YU will have the graveyard shift for the second year in a row.
Looking at the calendar for the W1YU net as a whole, it seems that Thursday afternoon (4-6:30), Saturday morning, before the Game (8-9:30), Saturday evening after the game or Sunday morning (8-10) would be the best time to meet as a group, given the AYA schedule and my obligations. This does not take into account the possibility of a PR event - but just a good time to get together in a meeting room or at a local watering hole/eatery. I am open for turning these available time slots into PR events and helping out with them, I just don't have the time to plan any at the moment.
73,
Sara Jones
KG6TUK/W1YU for October
PS Who has November?
Sara Jones, KG6TUK, President of the San Diego Yale Club, has become the new host for W1YU this month. So our club call has moved to California as W1YU/6. She helped with Katrina, and it will be interesting to hear how that played out. If she does return to the scene of the disaster, I imagine W1YU could become involved with the emergency/health and welfare response.
Station activity was limited in July since I was away on travel part of the time and the bands were not great due to the lows of the sunspot cycle. W1YU/4 checked into local 2 meter, 440 and 220 nets in the St. Petersburg area. The log also includes the following CW contacts:
20 Meters
HK1BYM Ate Colombia
K0KGY Ron Colorado
F5RRS Damien France
40 Meters
W3MT Moe Pennsylvania
W8EPD Dick Michigan
F5PLC Miche France
VE2PID Pierre Canada
F3WT Pierre France
Last Thursday, 9/29/05, The Yale Net met on EchoLink. We talked about setting up a first meeting on the Yale campus during the "big weekend" in November. We also talked about getting a repeater started on the Yale campus. A repeater on the 440 MHz UHF band might have the advantages of covering the areas where most Yale- affiliated people live; penetrating buildings for in-town use; and having available splits. However, 2 Meter repeaters that have fallen into disuse were also mentioned as providing potentially available splits. A low power repeater for use in New Haven was also mentioned as a potentially realistic way to start without going through the testing required for a new split. The pros and cons of affiliating with PVRA for a repeater set-up in New Haven were discussed, as were the advantages and disdvantages of linking with an existing repeater system.
Check-ins included WJ1D, Jim, our host on the NA1RA repeater, from Watertown, CT; WF1G, Paul from Waterbury, CT; KB1MFG, Ben, from Madison, CT; AA6E, Martin, from Branford, CT; and W4YD (W1YU/4), David, from St. Petersburg, FL. Gene, W3ZZ, says he may check in from Maryland this week (nice article on Non-Traditional Mechanisms of Transequatorial Propagation in this month's QST, Gene). We are also hoping to hear from Sara, KG6TUK (W1YU/6), and Jonathan, WA7RZW, in the near future.
Some of our members are having some difficulty getting on EchoLink. I recommend calling Jim, WJ1D, our host on the NA1RA repeater at 860-354-5701, as he has the expertise to offer definitive help.
Our next meeting on EchoLink will be on the NA1RA repeater, node 1124, on Thursday, October 6, 2005, at 9PM EDT (0100 Z). Please try to be there!!

David

1. Sara Jones, KG6TUK, has volunteered to help with the disaster in New Orleans. As a result, she says she will take over as W1YU/6 in October rather than in September as expected. As a result, W1YU is available in September for anyone who may wish to volunteer. If there are no volunteers for September, I will continue to host W1YU/4 in Florida...and perhaps elsewhere if I am recruited to help with Gulf Coast relief.
2. Joe, N1KHB, has met with success!! He contacted various Connecticut repeaters to see if any would host the weekly EchoLink Net for the Yale Radio Club. Jim, WJ1D, was a recipient of one of Joe's letters. He has volunteered to be our temporary host on his extensive repeater system (8 linked repeaters) throughout western Connecticut...mostly Litchfield County. The EchoLink node is 1124. The repeater is NA1RA-R. He can accomodate 8 via EchoLink...and more via RF into the repeaters.
We will meet on Thursdays via EchoLink (RF for those in Western Connecticut) beginning at 9PM EDT (0100 Zulu) (note correction -mse) for about a half hour. WJ1D will be on hand for technical assistance with the link-ups. The time limit for transmissions will be 2 minutes for EchoLink and 2.5 minutes for repeaters. Please pause 2 seconds between each transmission in order to avoid timing out the repeaters. For those in the area, all repeaters have a tone of 77. The repeaters include 471.850, Washington; 146.730, New Milford; 446.650, Watertown; 224.320, Warren; and 441.550, Harwinton.
3. I will miss the Thursday, September 15 net. W1YU/4 will be in Atlanta then...
4. We have submitted letters to the Editor at Yale Daily News and Yale Alumni Magazine to explain what we are trying to do but do not know whether we will be printed.
5. The W1YU/4 log for August included the following (SSB except as indicated CW):

David W4YD (W1YU/4)
July was a difficult month for propagation. The band was noisy when we held our net on Thursdays. We still are trying to have a net at 14.325 (alternate upward cascade in case of a Hurricane net or QRM: 14.330, 14.335, 14.340, 14.345 on Thursdays at 2300Z. However, we have decided to try to explore EchoLink as a supplemental device for getting the club net "on the air."
Joe, N1KHB, is checking into the availability of an EchoLink node for us in Connecticut as an alternative to HF with the following rationale:
W1YU/4 was very active during July despite the sometimes difficult band conditions. We enjoyed some openings on 6 meters this month and had contacts from our QTH in St. Petersburg, FL, with the following:
