Welcome to the Viola Question website! The VQ, as we affectionately call ourselves, is one of Yale's oldest improv comedy troupes. Founded in 1985, the VQ has quickly rooted itself in tradition. From Tour Toasting to Happy Circle to the longest improv comedy marathon in Connecticut, the VQ not only comes together as a group of actors, but as a society of friends. We perform not only for the benefit of our audiences, but for our own growth as well. ![]() What Do We Do? The VQ is a group of 12 students who come together to have fun, be creative, and make other people laugh. We perform numerous times a year at Yale (including our famous 12-hour improv marathon show!) and the rest of our shows take place at other colleges, high schools, and lower schools, private parties, and Improv Centers such as the Second City Stage in Chicago. Our shows are improv comedy based. Our improv consists of scenes that rely on audience suggestions for any number of things, such as the setting, subject, or relationship between characters. The audience provides this information and is told the rules which govern the game. We have a repertoire of approximately ninety games, some of which are classics of improv and some of which are our own inventions. Interested in Having us Perform or Conduct a Workshop? A typical VQ show lasts from 40 minutes to two hours. However, we can adapt our shows to any length. We have performed for all types of audiences, from children at elementary schools to adults at alumni reunions. The VQ also conducts workshops on learning and practicing improv comedy. During the academic term, our performances are limited to the Northeast, but during our Winter and Spring recesses we take week-long tours for which no destination is too far. If you are interested in having us perform, please contact our business manager, Paull Randt. To learn more about the Viola Question, please visit the links email us.
