Arts> Peforming Arts
Overview
The broad category of performing arts includes music, theater, and
dance. Other performers also in this industry include comedians,
mimes, spoken-word artists, street performers, and others. Although
talent is critical in succeeding, luck plays a role as well. As for
fine/visual artists, many performing artists continue practicing and
performing while working in other related or unrelated industries for
a steady salary.

Getting Started
Talent and the interest/ability to perform in front of audiences are
crucial. Performing artists must also be driven and continually
practice and improve their art. Ability is more important than
education, but music/theater/dance schools and graduate programs can
provide opportunities to increase one's talent, to develop one's
repertoire, and to make connections and learn the business of being a
performer. Practicing, auditioning, rehearsing, and performing are
ongoing throughout one's career. Take advantage of opportunities to
perform at Yale, in the community, and during the summer.
