The Yale Council on Southeast Asian Studies (SEAS) established the Southeast Asian Refugee Project which archives several publications from refugees. These publications can be accessed at SEAS Viet Nam Publications.

Vietnamese Courses at Yale
Studies on Vietnamese culture, history, and language are carried out through the SEAS. Much of the available courses and seminars may be found at Vietnamese Language and Literature.

An introduction to Eastern philosophy through the study of philosophical and religious texts. Topics include reality and illusion, knowledge, self, right and wrong, nonattachment, meditation, aesthetics, meaning of life, and death. Limited enrollment.

Students acquire basic working ability in Vietnamese, including sociocultural knowledge. Attention to integrated skills such as speaking, listening, writing (Roman script), and reading. No previous knowledge of or experience with Vietnamese language required.

An integrated approach to language learning aimed at strengthening students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Vietnamese. Students are thoroughly grounded in communicative activities such as conversations, performance simulation, drills, role plays, and games. Discussion of aspects of Vietnamese society and culture. After VIET 115 or equivalent.

For students with advanced Vietnamese language skills who wish to engage in concentrated reading and research on material not otherwise offered in courses. The work must be supervised by an adviser and must terminate in a term paper or its equivalent. Permission to enroll requires submission of a detailed project proposal and its approval by the language studies coordinator.

A brief introduction to Vietnamese culture and values. Topics include cultural and national identity, aesthetics, the meaning of life, war, and death. Selected readings from Zen poems, folklore, autobiographies, and religious and philosophical writings. All readings in translation. No previous knowledge of Vietnamese required.

For students with advanced Vietnamese language skills who wish to engage in concentrated reading and research.
