Overview of Yearly Events

Every year ViSA at Yale hosts a number of events, varying in degree of culture, art, or politics, as largely decided by our board and our members. The scope of our activities is by no means comprehensive by this list. The descriptions below, listed in typical chronological order, elaborate some of our more regular events

East Rock Picnic
Every fall ViSA kicks of the year with a low-key gathering among current and future members. Members take a trip up to East Rock, site of some of the most breath-taking views of New Haven. There, the entire organization becomes acquainted with each other, catches up from the previous summer, and welcomes the incoming freshman class to Yale, all against the backdrop of football, frisbee, and food.

Guest Dinners, Talks, and Lectures
Every year ViSA is host to a number of invitation of guests to Yale that broaden understanding of the Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American community through art, literature, poetry, and the like.

ViSA Cultural Show
ViSA's cultural shows are simply...unpredictable. After weeks of tireless (and also fun!) hours of rehearsing and acting, all of our talent is bared to the Yale community on formal stage. From serious shows demanding everybody's concentration to hilarious plays designed to rock the auditorium in laughter, ViSA members continually show off their talents.

ViSA Elections and White Elephant Party
The White Elephant Party takes place as the last meeting of the fall semester. As this event concludes the term of the ViSA board, members elect a new administration as well as bid adieu to the outgoing board, complete with hugs and tears. ViSA members traditionally gather at the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) to socialize, enjoy food (of course!), exchange gifts, and reflect about the experiences of the past semester.

AASA Basketball Tournaments
Though we may suffer from height disadvantages, ViSA still manages to enjoy our b-ball days as we compete with other cultural groups of the " Asian American Students Alliance(AASA). And, we do occasionally find some superstar players from within our ranks.

SEAS Cultural Show and Communiversity Day
To further share Vietnamese culture, ViSA takes part in annual cultural fests where the organization educates the community in fun ways about Vietnamese culture. ViSA traditionally participates in the Yale Southeast Asian Society (SEAS) cultural show to celebrate the advent of the Lunar New Year. In addition, ViSA takes part in Communiversity Day, an concerted extension of the Yale community into greater New Haven.

ViSA Pho Night, Cultural Dinner, and Iron Chef Competition
Not satisfied with just feeding ourselves good food at our special dinners, we share our Vietnamese culture with the Yale Community through food. Members roll up their sleeves and help out chopping, slicing, dicing, cooking, frying, broiling, and all other manners to prepare a 100% home-cooked meal for the general community.

ViSA Senior Banquet
Tears - but also smiles - are usually found during the ViSA end-of-year banquet in May, where the organization recognizes the outstanding four-year contributions of our seniors. Seniors depart with words of advice and wisdom for the underclassmen, and in turn are bestowed gifts of gratification for their years of dedication.
