Bulldogs Lose Two at Inter-Divisional
Still Hope to Make Championship League Tournament

February 22. 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs lost both games this Sunday and failed to make the play-off bracket at the NECVL Inter-divisional tournament, hosted at Yale University. Yale lost to Boston University and Fairfield in pool play. Dartmouth was also supposed to be in the same pool, but they pulled out of the tournament due to injuries. The Bulldogs were facing absences of their own, namely sophomore setter Niraj Patel.

The Bulldogs faced a tough first game against perennial powerhouse Boston University. The Bulldogs opened the match strongly going on a 5-1 run, but the Terriers came charging back and beyond, taking the game 25-16. The Bulldogs fell apart in the second game allowing Boston to open the game on an 11-0 run. Poor passing and some questionable hitting plagued the Bulldogs throughout that stretch as they could not seem to figure out BU's jump serve. The Bulldogs finally managed to side-out, but all they could manage to do the rest of the match was trade points with the Terriers. The finals score was 25-15.

"We knew BU was going to be tough," said junior Ian Randolph. "By the second game we were really just trying to find our rhythm for Fairfield."

The Bulldogs hopes for a play-off berth were still alive however, and with a victory over Fairfield they could move into the semi-finals. The Bulldogs had faced Fairfield twice earlier in the year. The first time they met at a tri-match in New Haven, the Bulldogs proved victorious in three games. The two also did battle in Providence three weeks ago where the Bulldogs also emerged victorious in three games. On this day, though, Fairfield had the upper-hand. The first game of the match was a see-saw battle which saw Fairfield come out on top 25-22. Yale came storming back in the second game, dominating from start to finish.

"The team really started clicking in that second game against Fairfield," said senior Ben Jacobs. "That is the way we should have been playing all day."

The Bulldogs won the second game by a score of 25-13. The final game was close the entire way, as the two teams traded points back and forth. Fairfield got a two point advantage half way through and held onto it until 13-11. Yale came up big though with two consecutive blocks from junior Charley Moore and tied the game up at 13. Providence then side-out and the Bulldogs were faced with a game point. Fairfield managed to hit a ball into the Yale block and the ball ricocheted out-of-bounds. The final score was 15-13 in favor of Fairfield.

The Bulldogs finish the season 5-5 in league play and will hope to earn an at-large bid into the League Championship. First and second place in league play and the inter-divisional each earned an automatic bid to the league championship, while the rest of the 10 team field will be filed by at-large bids.

If the Bulldogs make the tournament, they will play March 28 and 29 at Boston University.

Stay Informed on Yale Men's Volleyball

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale Men's Volleyball team now has their own blog. This will mostly be used as a developers blog, meaning that it will have updates on new features being implemented into the website. It will also be used to give little updates on the team that are not worthy of a full press release on the website. For instance, if there is a tournament on a Saturday, the blog might be updated that night with results, but the website will not have a full recap for a day or two. This is just one more way the Yale Men's Volleyball is trying to put information in the hands of our alumni, friends, families, and fans. The blog can be accessed by clicking the link on the right side of this press release and also from the quick links section located at the bottom of the website.

Bulldogs Conclude Divisional Play in Providence
4-3 Record Should Be Good Enough for Spot in Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Yale Men's Volleyball team wrapped up divisional play in Providence on Sunday with three big wins, The Bulldogs came into the day 1-3 in the division, after a rough weekend two weeks ago. To have any chance of making the league championships, the Bulldogs needed three wins.

Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs headed to Providence for their first weekend of regular season play. After a successful fall and a decent pre-season tournament, the Bulldogs had high hopes for the weekend. Unfortunately, junior Ian Randolph was playing on a sprained ankle and senior libero Ben Jacobs was out of town. Given those handicaps, and the fact that it was the only their second time playing without former setter Matt Nehls, the Bulldogs struggled. Yale opened the day against Fairfield, hoping to prove that they were a better team despite the loss of Nehls. The Bulldogs lost a tough first game 25-22, but they rebounded nicely, picking up the second game 25-21 and third game 15-12. After a good comeback win, it was downhill for the Bulldogs from there. The Bulldogs next faced a Columbia team that according to the players was more than beatable. The team came out looking tired and flat after a lunch break.

"Columbia was a team we should have beaten," said sophomore Niraj Patel. "We just looked dead on the court and our heads were not in the game."

After winning the first game, they dropped a devastating second game. The Bulldogs had a significant lead and let Columbia back in the door, losing 26-24. Yale went on to lose the third game and the match.

The Bulldogs next faced URI, arguably the top team in the south division. This was not the first time the Bulldogs had seen URI, who lost to them a week earlier at the Marty Open. Yale recovered from their loss to Columbia and came out firing in the first game. After staying within a couple points the entire game, Yale was unable to gain the points on serve that they needed to overtake URI and ultimately lost 25-23. After putting so much into the first game, the Bulldogs looked mentally drained. URI dominated the second game from start to finish, winning 25-17.

"That second game at URI was a total mental lapse," said junior Ian Randolph. "People put so much into that first game that URI jumped on us early in the second and we never recovered."

After URI, the Bulldogs had one final match against UConn. The Bulldogs beat UConn in the fall, but both teams came to Providence with different rosters. UConn gained a few players back from injury and the Yale team has been in a total state of upheaval since the fall. The Bulldogs dropped both games to UConn, 25-17 and 25-20.

"I think everyone was tired by the time we got to the UConn match," said junior Charley Moore. "It was our fourth match of the game, and we had been at Providence for seven hours by the time we took the court. UConn is a team we will beat if we see them in the league championships."

After a disappointing weekend, the Bulldogs went back to work last week to prepare for the final weekend of divisional play. The Bulldogs showed up Sunday with a healthy Randolph and with Jacobs back in the line-up. The difference was striking.

The Bulldogs came out against Roger Williams in the first match and took the first game 25-22. After getting a lead in the second game, Yale let Roger Williams back in the door and ended up dropping the second game 21-25. They recovered nicely, however, taking the third game 15-12. Within the first game, it became immediately noticeable that having Jacobs back at the helm of the defense was a major help. Not only was Jacobs' passing an addition, but his leadership in the back line made everyone else pass better.

After a lunch break, the Bulldogs faced the host school Providence. Providence was poised to be the Bulldogs toughest match of the day, but Yale was up to the challenge and dispatched the Friars easily. Yale won 25-17, 25-20 and dominated from start to finish.

"The best thing about the Providence match was that we finally got a lead and maintained it in the second game," said Moore. "We got a huge lead in the first game and then were content to lose a couple points and side out. We never really drove the nail in the coffin. But in the second game we got a lead and never let the Friars get within three points again. It was nice to see us staying aggressive. We forced them to make mistakes with our own aggressive play."

The final game of the day was Brown. The Bulldogs took the first game easily, but struggled in the second game. The Bears fought to stay close the entire game and it took the Bulldogs an extra point to close out the game 26-24.

With the three wins, the Bulldogs improved to 4-3 in divisional play and have put themselves in a good place to get a bid to the league championships. Unofficially, the Bulldogs sit in either third or fourth in the south division with URI, UConn and Providence making up the top-four. The Bulldogs will now have two weeks off before hosting the interdivisional tournament in New Haven at Payne Whitney Gymnasium

Bulldogs Make Quarterfinals at Marty Open
Finish Top Eight

BOSTON, Mass - The Yale Men's Volleyball team finished in the top eight this weekend at the Marty Open. The tournament which took place over just one day featured four pools of five teams with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the championship bracket.

The Bulldogs tournament got off to a rocky start, when they arrived ten minutes late and were forced to forfeit their first match against Williams. It would later prove to be of no consequence, but for a while could have been the determining factor in the Bulldogs success.

The next two opponents, Brandeis and UMass Lowell, proved to be of little difficulty for the Bulldogs. Though in all four games the opponent never lost by more than seven points and in most cases only four, there was never a sense that the Bulldogs were in any trouble.

Rhode Island proved to be the Bulldogs toughest opponent of the day. While the game did not make a difference in terms of advancing, both Yale and URI had already locked up a spot in the bracket, it was an important match for seeding. The Bulldogs hung tough, losing 19-25 and 21-25, but URI controlled the game from start to finish.

The Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals where they faced the University of New Hampshire. UNH won the match 21-25, 22-25, but the Bulldogs really felt like they left something on the table.

"I think UNH was a beatable team for us," said senior Ben Jacobs. "We had only practiced twice with our line-up, because we have had a lot of personnel changes recently. All things considered, I think this was a very good tournament for us."

The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend at the first league tournament in Providence, R.I.

New Leadership for Yale Men's Volleyball
Matt Nehls Graduates Early

NEW HAVNE, Conn. - We are sad to report that our captain, Matt Nehls, has decided not to return to Yale for his final semester. Matt had enough credits to graduate early and has decided to do so. We wish him all the best in whatever path his life takes next. In his absence graduate student Jarrett Moyer, senior Ben Jacobs and juniors Ian Randolph and Charley Moore will be taking over the leadership of the team. Matt was a great leader and a great captain who will be missed. However, the team sees no reason for any drop off and is already hard at work on putting together a lineup that will lead us to success this spring.

Bulldogs Finish in Third-Fourth at Navy Tournament
Defeat Navy in Pool Play

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Yale men's volleyball team travelled to Annapolis, Md. this past weekend to take part in a tournament hosted by Navy. The tournament was won by Navy, who defeated Maryland in two games. The four semifinal teams all defeated each other at some point during the tournament. Yale beat Navy in pool play, Navy defeated Boston, Boston took down Maryland in pool play and Maryland defeated Yale in the semifinals.

The Bulldogs were coming off wins in a pair of preseason matches against UConn and Fairfield, and looking to build upon their success. The tournament featured 16 teams from around the east coast split up into four pools. The top two teams from each pool advanced on to the gold bracket.

The Bulldogs opened the tournament against Johns Hopkins, defeating them in two games (25-20, 25-23). The match was closer than the Bulldogs would have liked, but it was their first match of the year and there was bound to be some rust.

"I think we came out a little flat against Hopkins," said junior Charley Moore. "You do not get as much time to warm up at tournaments, and this was our first official match of the year with a lot of new guys playing. I think it was important that even though we did not play great, we were able to tough out a win."

It was a similar story in the Bulldogs second match of the day against Temple B. Yale won in two games (25-20, 33-31), but according to players it shouldn't have been nearly as close.

"We jumped out to a big lead in the second game," said captain Matt Nehls. "We made some substitutions and our second-string guys were able to hold on for a tough win."

The highlight of the tournament came in Yale's final pool play match. With a number one seed on the line, the Bulldogs faced the home team Midshipmen. Navy, who finished 35th last year at D1 Nationals, had both confidence and a home crowd. Both teams came into the match with 2-0 records and the winner would get the top seed in the gold bracket. The Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead in the first game, but Navy slowly came back. The Bulldogs were able to side-out their way to a first game victory (25-23).

"I think winning the first game was huge," said Moore. "Not only did it give us some confidence, because we had finally hit our stride, but it also put Navy on their heels. I do not think Navy was expecting to be down to us, especially after having watched us play Hopkins and Temple."

Navy took the second game (20-25) and Yale was faced with their first third game of the year. Navy jumped out to an early lead but Yale came charging back and took 15-12 victory and the number one seed for the afternoon session.

The Bulldogs opened the afternoon session with a match against USAV, a post-graduate club of men. The Bulldogs again took the first game (25-20) and then lost the second game by the same margin. It came down to a third game, where it was win or go home. The Bulldogs decided to stick around for the semi finals, defeating USAV by a score of 15-13.

The Bulldogs tournament hopes ended when they faced Maryland in the semifinals. Maryland finished 33rd at D1 Nationals in 2008. Yale hung tough, but lost in two games to a strong Maryland team (23-25, 21-25).

"We just did not have our best stuff against Maryland," said Nehls. "I think we got a little physically and mentally fatigued after playing five matches in seven hours."

Junior Ian Randolph led the Bulldogs with 37 kills and four service ace. Moore led the team in kill percentage converting 70% of his attempts. He finished with 28 kills. Freshman Ed Wiese, graduate student Jarrett Moyer, Nehls and junior Phil Michael combined to score the rest of Yale's points. Wiese led the group with 15 kills; Moyer added 14 and Nehls dropped in 11. Michael had six kills in his competitive volleyball debut.

The Bulldogs will return to action at Boston University on Dec. 6

Well, one year later and my family still hasn't decided to move yet, so that makes it 20 years in the same house for me. I've decided to continue my pursuit of the economics and English double major, and am particularly excited about the potential for doing some cross-analysis between the two disciplines in the next couple of years.

Outside of volleyball and academics, I've become even more involved with Yale Daily News Business. I was recently elected Publisher, which puts me in charge of all business-related aspects of the paper. These range from things as important as choosing our printers, to things as trivial as funding our monthly happy hours (although some will argue that this is actually my most significant activity). I also still tutor a local New Haven student, now in 5th grade, and continue to staff a couple of Model UN conferences a year.

I first started playing volleyball as a freshman in high school and have loved it ever since. During the summer, I enjoy nothing more than playing beach volleyball down the shore. Aside from that, I don't quite know what I want to study yet, but my ultimate goal in life is to save the world. Years down the road, I might look back on my eighteen-year-old dreams as naïve, but for now, I probably want to go into international health or public policy in the future.

In addition to volleyball, I'm very interested in international affairs and politics. I also enjoy painting watercolors, working out occasionally, and eating some good seafood. And of course, I'm loving college so far and looking forward to four great years at Yale.

Hello. My name is Kevin Kang, and I'm a sophomore in Berkeley College. I&apos.ve been really enjoying my life at Yale thus far. I first started playing volleyball when I first came to the states as a 7th grader. It really helped me to make friends and learn English. And yet again, I&apos.ve met amazing friends on this team, and volleyball continues to be a big part of my life. When I'm not studying, playing volleyball, or hanging out with my friends, I usually work out in the gym or attend dance sessions (popping/street) for Freestyle Xpression Crew (FXC). It's been a delightful year and a half thus far, and I look forward another five semesters, although I might spend a term or two in China to master Chinese.

Since I'm not sure what I want to do for the rest of my life, and staying in Brazil would require me to choose as soon as I began college, I left home in order to come study here in the US. Hopefully I can get a better idea of what it is I want to study, even though I'm leaning towards doing something business related. I plan to go back home once I'm done here and hopefully help bring change to Brazil.

Outside of school and volleyball, I like to play basketball, watch movies, and play the drums. I'm looking to get more involved in Yale, but since I just got here, I'm taking my time.

I'm new to competitive volleyball (there isn't a lot of men's volleyball in Wyoming), but I'm already having a great time learning the sport and getting to know the team. In the past, I played for fun in intramurals, but getting to see and play the sport at a high level is an eye-opening experience. I spend most of my week working toward my degree in chemical engineering. My goal is to eventually be able to do research and consulting on renewable energy technologies. Outside of schoolwork, I also play club baseball, work in a lab in Yale's Center for Research on Interface Surface Phenomena, and I'm a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. I'm looking forward to winning a lot of games with a great group of guys this year.

I grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago, with my parents and younger brother, Willy. I attended New Trier High School, where I played basketball and volleyball. When I came to Yale, I decided to try something new by walking onto the Heavyweight Crew team. After two years of rowing, I have been drawn back to the joys of playing volleyball. In the classroom, I am an English major, but I have a strong interest in technology and computers. Within English, I try to study the classics as often as possible, which is why I have included The Aeneid as one of my favorite books. I have even read it in Latin after studying the language for eight years. This past summer, while taking classes in London, I finally got to realize my dream of going to Rome. After graduation, I plan on going into business of some kind, perhaps finance or private equity.

When I'm not studying or playing volleyball, I work for Yale Sports Publicity. I cover men's and women's golf, as well as women's swimming. My tasks involve keeping their websites up-to-date and writing the recaps of their events, all of which can be found on the Yale athletics website. Speaking of websites, I am also the new webmaster for our volleyball website. It has taken a large portion of my time, but the final product will be worth it. I am also an Eagle Scout and hold a black belt in Shotokan Karate.

Volleyball has been a big part of my life since I first started playing it competitively 12 years ago. Since then I've had the opportunity to play for many different teams and travel the country playing in four national tournaments. Being able to continue playing while being a graduate student, and being on a good team at the same time, definitely makes my time in New Haven more enjoyable. The real reason I'm here is to be trained to be an experimental condensed matter physicist. Outside of living the exciting life of a physicist and playing volleyball, I'm active in Trinity Baptist Church where I play guitar and bass (and hopefully drums soon too) in the evening worship band. Where I'll go after Yale is still very much in question, but it has always been a dream of mine to live in rural Maine community, but combining a life in Maine with the life of a physicist will be a challenge I need to overcome.

Besides volleyball, I am an avid musician, playing keyboards, drums, and singing. I love going to the gym and playing any sport recreationally, and I spend a significant amount of my downtime at the beach when at home. Outside of my academics, I'm involved with an international leadership development program at Yale called AIESEC, serving on the executive board, and I find working with all different types of people all over the world very rewarding.

I'm a laid-back California guy trying to keep the pace slow and easy on the hyperactive Yale campus. I love singing with the Yale Russian Chorus, playing super smash brothers with my suitemates, running all over Connecticut, and playing ultimate Frisbee, but most of all, I love volleyball. Volleyball practice is my favorite part of the week, and I can hardly sleep the night before a match I'm so excited. My goal this year is to become an all-league outside hitter.

After Yale I hope to attend law school and go into public policy. I hope to reform our nation's K-12 education policy to give all Americans the same high quality education I was fortunate enough to receive.

I'm not sure exactly what my future plans are, but I'll probably go to grad school for a little while.

Outside of Volleyball, I'm a member of the Yale Glee Club, a large chorus and the oldest undergraduate organization on campus. In my free time, I enjoy going to the local restaurant Yorkside with my friends as often as possible!

I graduated this past spring from the Gilman School, an all-boys prep school in Northern Baltimore. In addition to playing 3 years of varsity volleyball, I played varsity squash, varsity baseball, and was the editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper. As a first-year student, I'm still undecided with regards to my major. However, I've always been more interested in the humanities than math and the sciences, so it is likely that I will pursue a major in English, history, literature, etc.

Despite the fact that the Ravens and Orioles have recently fallen on hard times, I'm a big-time Baltimore sports fans. There are few things that I enjoy more than attending a Ravens/O's game with my friends and family. I also enjoy playing Xbox-especially Halo and FIFA soccer-and, of course, I love sitting down and reading a good book.

I'm a sophomore in Trumbull majoring in psychology and economics with no real idea of where to go after. I'm thinking law school eventually, but that's still under consideration. Actually, the one thing that I really want to do, above all else, is to be a Mythbuster (yeah, that Discovery Channel show.) Not sure how to get there, but eventually I'll find a way.

I love volleyball, and am really stoked to be on the team. When I'm not working hard and hardly working in, unfortunately, equal quantities, I enjoy munching on Pocky.

Besides volleyball, I am an avid fan of sports in general. I love staying active playing pick-up games of any type and watching football (Giants), soccer (Arsenal), and college basketball (UConn) on the TV. Here at Yale, I am involved with the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and, of course, club volleyball.

I grew up in Northern California, went to college in Southern California, and worked after college in the Bay Area, so it's pretty easy to say I'm from the entire state of California. I love Chico the most, since that's where I can appreciate the simpler aspects of life without sacrificing the benefits of technology in today's society. In high school I was on the swim team and volleyball team every year, and played percussion in the school band. Back then I owned my own drum set and loved to jam with friends whenever I could, but after high school that faded since my drums were never as mobile as I was. My love of volleyball has been carried with me wherever I go, and I will play it as long as my body is able.

I graduated in 2008 from Pepperdine University with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Mathematics, and am attending Yale in hopes of getting my Masters degree (also in Computer Science). I will be the first to admit that I am a nerd at heart, and enjoy video games and movies with fantasy or sci-fi themes. I strive to live a life that is centered around the people I care about and truly believe that the worth I get out of life is not a factor of money or possessions, but instead it grows from the positive impact I can have on others as a result of putting them before myself.
