On Saturday,
November 15, 2003, the Ulysses S. Grant Foundation, Yale's oldest community
service organization, celebrated a half a century of educational
programming. US Grant alumni led a thought-provoking discussion about the
successes and challenges of the US Grant Foundation over the past fifty years.
The Grant
alumni panelists included:
Jonathan Fanton President, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
Flemming Norcott Supreme Court Justice, Connecticut Supreme Court
Marcus Rivera Connecticut Department of Education
Vanessa Roberts Attorney
Roger Vann Chief Development Officer, National NAACP
Norbert Robinson Manager, Yale New Haven Hospital Pharmacy Operations
Richard Brodhead Dean of Yale College, panel moderator
Afterwards,
100 guests attended a lovely dinner in Dwight Hall where alumni and friends
reconnected with old Grant acquaintances and met current students and
staff. Dinner will included musical performances from Whim 'n Rhythm and Amber
Whitmire, a Grant student alumna. Dana LaMon, a Grant teacher alumnus,
delivered an inspiring address at the dinner, reflecting on the important
relationships that were formed for so many during the US Grant program.
The
Ulysses S. Grant Foundation presented an award of recognition to its founder, Eugene
Van Voorhis. Grant also presented awards of appreciation to its partners: Yale
University and the New Haven Public Schools. Gregory S.
Prince, a Grant teacher alumnus and the President of Hampshire College, presented
the foundation's award to Yale University. Michael Morand, Yale's Vice
President of New Haven and State Affairs, accepted on behalf of the
university. Willie Elder, a Grant student alumnus and a principal of a
New Haven public school, presented the foundation's award to the New Haven
Public Schools. Dr. Charles Warner, Director of Instruction,
accepted on behalf of the schools.
