Overview
The Ulysses S. Grant Foundation is an academic summer program for talented and motivated middle school students from New Haven. Since 1953, U.S. Grant has drawn on the experience and enthusiasm of Yale undergraduates to challenge students so they can acquire the academic preparation and skills they will need to enter and succeed in college and excel in their current school environment. The program is designed for bright students who might have limited opportunities and resources to participate in academic enrichment activities.
Summer Program
U.S. Grant offers a six-week summer program on the Yale University campus for New Haven middle school students. Each morning, in small, single-grade classes of 8-15 students, Yale undergraduates teach classes of their own design to challenge and excite their students. In Humanities classes, students study history and write speeches, read and discuss poetry and do creative writing of their own. In Investigations classes, students develop their problem-solving skills through fun, hands-on projects in the natural and social sciences. In the afternoon, students participate in electives and clubs that offer them the opportunity to learn in a more relaxed environment with students from other grades. Typical afternoon activities include sports and games, creative classes in music and the performing arts, debate and mock trial and a book club. In addition, students enjoy a variety of local and regional field trips.
This year the summer program runs from June 30 – August 6, 2008. U.S. Grant upholds a strict attendance policy and only considers students who can commit to attending every day of the program.
The entire cost of the summer program is $75 and is paid upon acceptance. Financial aid is available to a limited number of students. If interested, please make a note on the application. Family income and other information may be requested.
The 2008 Summer Program runs from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. The program is located at Dwight Hall on Yale’s Old Campus.
Student Application Process
U.S. Grant invites talented and motivated New Haven students to apply to participate. Only serious students who like to try new things and are hard workers should apply. Returning Grant students must re-apply each year. Applications are available online or can be picked up at local middle schools, but we are no longer accepting applications for this summer. Please check back in the winter for the application for Summer 2009.
