| In the Schoolyard Unit, students learn that even
the schoolyard is part of the natural world. They also begin
to appreciate the importance of open space as they trace New
they trace New Haven’s landscape development from pre-settlement
times to the present. By studying the history of their city
and creating a wildlife enhancement project that changes their
schoolyard, students recognize the role humans and nature play
in shaping the landscape. They see their schoolyard as a natural
environment that supports a variety of plant and animal species
and a range of ecological processes.
