| The cemetery unit provides
a geological overview of landscape change. Students discover
that the Earth’s crust, composed of rocks and minerals,
is reshaped slightly every day. Plate tectonics build up the
crust while weathering and erosion break it down. At a local
historic cemetery, students look for change over time on gravestones,
noting differences in resistance to decay among rock types.
As the children use the markers to gather historical, social
and environmental evidence about their community, they learn
that cemeteries served as models for urban parks. The unit
concludes with a look at seasonal change and lessons in wildlife
tracking that encourage students to enjoy nature year-round.
