Derek Halberg was an
intern with URI during Fall 1995 and Spring 1996, when he worked
as an Environmental Educator in the Learn & Serve Ecology
Program at the Sheridan Middle School in New Haven. From 1996
to 2004, he worked at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington,
VA, overseeing a program to manage natural resources on Army
National Guard installations across the country. In the fall
of 2004, Derek returned to his home state of North Carolina to
become the Director of Land Protection for the Tar River Land
Conservancy based in Louisburg, NC. He says that he still "looks
back fondly on his interactions with kids and teachers at Sheridan
Middle School. I genuinely felt that the projects that we worked
on brought them closer to their environment." Derek, his
wife Christy, and their son Caden currently live in Chapel Hill. |
