Tips for Stress-Free Travel
- Give yourself plenty of time to meet schedules. Lines at train stations, airport check-in, and traffic jams are less stressful if you have padded your schedule.
- Keep a snack in your carry-on bag... a granola bar is a good choice. Low blood sugar can make you anxious and stressed-out. A bottle of water is a good idea too.
- Traveling to another country? Make two photocopies of your passport and plane ticket. Keep one in your suitcase and leave another copy with a friend or your family who will be here in the USA.
- Pack lightly! Airlines are increasingly strict about baggage, including the dimensions and weight of your carry-on luggage.
- Keep your wallet in your front pocket and avoid carrying cash. Be particularly cautious in crowded areas, such as train stations, airports, and while watching street performers.
- Be particularly careful about drugs and alcohol.
a. Many states and foreign countries have exceptionally strict drinking and driving laws.
b. It is a federal offense to drink alcohol on an airplane unless it was served to you by an airline employee.
c. It is a federal offense for an airline to let you on board a flight if you appear intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
- Keep your cool and don’t joke while you are in airports or clearing customs and immigration.
a. It is a federal offense to make a "false statement" about terrorism, hijacking, smuggling, and so forth. Even if you are obviously joking, you may be subject to a fine and/or imprisonment.
b. It is also illegal to assault, threaten, or intimidate an airline employee. Even if you’re angry or frustrated, stay calm and polite.
