Travel Sun Sense
Avoid overexposure to the sun:
- Seek shade
avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight - Protect your skin with clothing
wear a hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long pants
choose fabric with a tight weave - Apply sunscreen
with a SPF factor of 15 or more
30 minutes before exposure to the sun
every two hours, after swimming or heavy perspiration
on overcast days as the UV rays are still harmful - Wear sunglasses
with 99%-100% UV absorption - Avoid other sources of UV light
tanning beds and sunlamps are hazardous as the UV radiation they deliver can damage your skin
Unsense
protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun
If you are sunburned:
do
- Apply cool baking soda baths or compress for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day
- Apply moisturizing lotion to the skin
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen) to alleviate discomfort
- Visit Urgent Care if you experience dizziness, rapid pulse and rapid breathing, nausea, fever, pale and cool skin, or your sunburn is very severe and painful
Do NOT
- Apply petroleum jelly, ointment, or butter to sunburn which prevents air flow and worsens the symptoms
- Wash burned skin with harsh soap
