Making Sex Safer

Condoms

  • Check the expiration date on the condom wrapper.
  • Use a new condom every time you have sex.
  • Use only condoms made of latex rubber.
  • Use a condom with lubricant for vaginal and anal intercourse.
  • Store condoms in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not keep a condom in a wallet for more than a few hours.
  • Carefully open the packet so you do not tear the condom.
  • If you put the condom on upside-down by accident, use a new condom (one drop of semen contains over 500,000 sperm).
  • Pinch the tip of the condom to give a half-inch space for semen to collect, or use a condom with a receptacle tip.
  • If you feel a condom break while having sex STOP IMMEDIATELY and put on a new condom.
  • After ejaculation, before the penis gets soft, grip the condom at the base of the penis and carefully withdraw from your partner.
  • Pull the condom off gently, be careful that no semen spills out.
  • Dispose of the condom in a waste basket, not the toilet. Condoms are not biodegradable.
  • Condoms provide an effective protection from pregnancy if use consistently and correctly.
