Beating the Flu

Flu Prevention Tips

  • Wash your hands often.
  • Avoid touching your nose and eyes
  • Maintain a nutritious and well-balanced diet.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Don't share your toothbrush or toothpaste.
  • Keep your room well ventilated.
  • Get vaccinated if you are 65 or older, have a chronic lung or heart condition, or work in health care.

Alleviating Symptoms

  • Stay in bed until your fever is gone.
  • For fever, muscle aches, or headaches take Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.
  • Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • To alleviate a sore throat, gargle with warm salt water.
  • To loosen congestion, drink hot fluids.

Come to YUHS if:

  • Your fever is over 101 degrees.
  • Your cough lasts for more than two weeks.
  • You develop face/ear pain, shortness of breath or a stiff neck.
  • Your throat is so sore you can not swallow.
  • You are unable to retain fluids due to vomiting or diarrhea.
