H1N1 Vaccine Update (November 17, 2009)
We continue to receive small shipments of the H1N1 vaccine from the State of Connecticut. We are currently offering vaccine to:
- All of our pregnant patients
- All of our pediatric patients 6 months to 18 years old *
- 18-24 year old Yale University students by pre-registered clinic (the current clinics are full; we will be conducting more clinics as we receive more vaccine)
- Parents and close contacts of infants 0-6 months old
*Children less than 2 years old and those older than 2 with asthma or other chronic health conditions must receive the injectable vaccine. Children 2 and older without any chronic medical conditions will receive the nasal FluMist®. It is important to note that our current supply in Pediatrics is still not sufficient to immunize everyone, so appointment availability is limited. At this time, we are not scheduling H1N1 booster appointments. This website will be updated as additional vaccine becomes available for boosters.
[If your school-age child is able to receive the H1N1 vaccine from their school, we recommend that they receive it there. Parents may also call their local Health Department to inquire about their vaccine supply if we are unable to accommodate you here at YHP.]
We will update this site as we receive more vaccine. We will continue to follow the CDC recommendation that certain groups of the population receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine when it first becomes available. These target groups include (order of target groups does not indicate priority):
1. Pregnant women
2. People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months
3. Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel – must have direct patient contact and health care students with direct patient contact—nursing, PA and medical
4. All children aged 6 months to 4 years old
5. Children/young adults ages 5-24 years old who are at a higher risk because of chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems
6. All other children/young adults between the ages of 5-24 yrs old
7. People ages of 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems
Once the demand for vaccine for the prioritized groups has been met we will also begin vaccinating everyone from the ages of 25 through 64 years. Current studies indicate that the risk for infection among persons age 65 or older is less than the risk for younger age groups. However, once vaccine demand among younger age groups has been met, we will offer vaccination to people 65 or older.
