Tangled Up In Blue was founded fifteen years ago by folk musician and Yale graduate Nerissa Nields and since then has performed alongside such musicians as Arlo Guthrie, Dar Williams, Sweet Honey In The Rock, and Odetta. Our co-ed group of fifteen undergrads sings a large variety of folk music, ranging from old Irish ballads to early American spirituals to the 1960's folk of Bob Dylan, the Band, and CSN(Y). We perform original, four-part vocal arrangements with our own instrumental accompaniment, which over the years has included guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, flute and drum. We hold auditions for new members in the fall, and, while some members have had significant experience in choruses and other musical groups, others just grew up singing in the shower, where choral arrangements are more difficult. Our concerts have become famous on the Yale campus because of our informality and our improvisation; we give our audience both a jam session to listen to and songs to which they can sing along. Although we perform most of our concerts in and around New Haven, we do travel for a week-long tour every spring. Recent trips have taken TUIB to Oregon, Washington, California, Vermont, Massachusetts, Virginia, Washington D.C, New Orleans, and, most recently, North Carolina. This spring, TUIB plans to make a tour of the Northeast. TUIB has also recorded four albums to date.
