2. Fellows Meeting Invitation
Dear Trumbull College students:
The Trumbull College Fellows will be meeting again on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in the Fellows Lounge, entryway K, second floor.
The guest speaker for this meeting is Aaron Gerow, Assistant Professor & DUS of Film Studies and Assistant Professor of East Asian Langugages and Literatures.
Professor Gerow's presentation is titled " The Many Pages of A Page of Madness: Modernism and Japanese Silent Film." Kinugasa Teinosuke’s 1926 film, A Page of Madness (Kurutta ichipeiji), is celebrated as one of the masterpieces of silent cinema. It was an independently produced, experimental, avant-garde work from Japan whose brilliant use of cinematic technique was equal to if not superior to that of contemporary European cinema. But is this film really what it seems to be? Using meticulous research on the film’s production, distribution, exhibition, and reception, as well as close analysis of the film’s shooting script and shooting notes recently made available, Professor Gerow draws a new picture of this complex work, one revealing a film divided between experiment and convention, modernism and melodrama, the image and the word, cinema and literature, conflicts that play out in the story and structure of the film and its context.
As in the past, up to ten (10) Trumbull College students are invited to join the Fellows for this talk. If you are interested in attending, please email me at william.massa@yale.edu no later than Wednesday, March 25, 2009, by 12:00 noon. If you find out later that you are unable to attend, please email me immediately so that I can invite any students on the wait list. We can only accommodate ten students so the first ten who respond will be invited. As soon as I read your email, I will respond to it.
Remember, do not respond to the Master's Office but email william.massa@yale.edu
Sincerely,
Bill Massa
Trumbull College Executive Fellow
