4.  VERDI'S "RIGOLETTO" AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA

DEADLINE to apply:  4:00 p.m. SATURDAY, JANUARY 24.

The next opera in this year's Trumbull series subscription to the Metropolitan Opera will be next TUESDAY, JANUARY 27.  We will leave Trumbull PROMPTLY at 4:00 p.m.  The cost is $15.00, including dinner.

Please CHECK YOUR SCHEDULE before you respond to make certain that you can go if you are selected.

The opera is "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi; it is based upon Victor Hugo's play, "Le Roi s'amuse".  It is the story of a hunchbacked court jester who tries to protect his beautiful daughter from the corrupt court.  Alas, he fails.  But "Rigoletto" contains some of Verdi's finest melodies and arias.  And it is great theater: "Never before had Verdi succeeded so forcefully in etching characters in music".*  It is a powerful opera.

If you would like to attend, please submit your name to Prof. Henrich by e-mail BEFORE 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24.  Names will be selected by RANDOM DRAWING and the students notified later Saturday evening or on Sunday.
