2008-09 TC Housing Information

Trumbull College housing is determined by a lottery system that acknowledges seniority.  Rising sophomores choose housing first, as they are guaranteed housing for the sophomore year, then rising seniors, and then rising juniors. In order to make our housing lottery easier, student rooms are pre-assigned to each TC class and are color-coded for easy reference (green for sophomores, orange for juniors, and pink for seniors).  These room arrangements may vary depending on the demand for on-campus housing.  In addition, Trumbull’s annex location is in McClellan Hall on Old Campus and is reserved for juniors only.  FYI:  Typically, those student rooms located in the Stone Court of Trumbull College near the Master, the Dean, and the Fellows’ residential areas have a tradition of being quiet suites for obvious reasons.  Also note that the color-coded posters of available TC housing will be posted in front of the Dean’s Office several weeks before the lottery for students to study the room selection.

All Trumbull students must attend the mandatory housing meeting for their class.  They will then be given intent forms with their names printed on them (except for the rising sophomores who are required to live on-campus).  The Housing Committee will ask rising juniors and seniors to return the signed intent forms indicating whether they plan to live on- or off-campus to the TC Dean’s Office one week before the Spring break in order to gather the appropriate housing data for the room draw.  If a student fails to submit the intent form, the Committee will assume that the student plans to live off-campus during the next academic year.

All Trumbull students wishing to live on-campus will need to officially register for their housing draw either by picking up a registration form from the TC Dean’s Office or by getting it on-line from the TC Housing website (www.yale.edu/trumbull).  The housing registration will take place immediately following the Spring Break.  Students will be asked to submit the signed registration forms (one per suite) to the TC Dean’s Office by Friday at 5:00 pm.  If a student fails to submit his/her housing registration form he/she will not be able to enter the room draw the following week and will not be guaranteed housing for the next academic year.

The number and room draw will take place in the Trumbull College Dining Hall for each class separately.

NUMBER AND ROOM DRAW FOR RISING SOPHOMORES

Rising sophomores will be asked to pick one number per suite (one registration form) from a hat and report this number to the Housing Committee on Sunday night.  If a particular student cannot attend the number and room draw that takes place the same night, he/she will be able to designate a proxy who will then participate in the event.  Once all prospective groups pick their numbers, the rising sophomore class representatives will call these numbers (starting with the lowest number) and ask each group to come to the front table to choose a room on the large housing draw boards. Once a choice has been made (including particular bedroom assignments) and the color-coded sticker with a student’s name affixed to the board, the suite number will be called out, and those students will be asked to leave the hall.  This process will continue until everyone in this class has chosen a room.

NUMBER AND ROOM DRAW FOR RISING SENIORS

Immediately following the rising sophomore room draw on Sunday night, rising seniors will participate in the number draw and room.  Starting with the groups registered for 5-person suites, one representative of each group will be asked to pick a number from a hat and report this number to the Housing Committee. If a particular student cannot attend the number draw, he/she will be able to designate a proxy who will then participate in the event.  Once all groups entering 5-person suites pick their numbers, the rising senior class representatives will call these numbers (starting with the lowest number) based on the number of available suites and ask each group to come to the front table to choose a room on the large housing draw boards. Once a choice has been made (including particular bedroom assignments) and the color-coded sticker with a student’s name affixed to the board, the suite number will be called out, and those students will be asked to leave the hall.  This process will continue until all 5-person suites are chosen.  The remaining students who did not get the desired 5-person suite will then be asked to reconfigure based on the available housing options for their class.  All groups interested in the 4-person suite will then be asked to pick their numbers and repeat the same lottery process as for the 5-person suites.  This process will continue until all senior suites are chosen.

Immediately following the senior suite draw the remaining rising seniors will attend the number and room draw for stand-alone single rooms.  Each registered student will be asked to pick one number from a hat and report this number to the Housing Committee. Their class representatives will call the numbers (starting with the lowest number) and ask each student to come to the front table to choose a room on the large housing draw boards.  Once a choice has been made and the color-coded sticker with a student’s name affixed to the board, the room number will be called out, and those students will be asked to leave the hall.  This process will continue until everyone in this class has chosen a room.

NUMBER AND ROOM DRAW FOR RISING JUNIORS

On the following night (Monday night) the rising juniors will participate in the number and room draw.  Starting with the groups registered for 9-person suites, one representative of each group will be asked to pick a number from a hat and report this number to the Housing Committee. If a particular student cannot attend the number draw, he/she will be able to designate a proxy who will then participate in the event.  Once all groups entering 9-person suites pick their numbers, the rising junior class representatives will call the lowest number and ask this group to come to the front table to choose their particular bedrooms on the large housing draw boards. Once a choice has been made and the color-coded sticker with a student’s name affixed to the board, the suite number will be called out, and those students will be asked to leave the hall.  The remaining students who did not get the desired 9-person suite will then be asked to reconfigure based on the available housing options for their class.  All groups interested in the 8-person suite will then be asked to pick their numbers and repeat the same lottery process as for the 9-person suites.  This process will continue until all suites in both Trumbull College and McClellan Hall (our annex location) have been chosen.

Available Housing per Class

SOPHOMORES

All sophomores will live in 6-person suites, and therefore must register in complete groups of six unless an odd number of rising sophomores is left at the end of the draw.  The Housing Committee will recombine incomplete sextets if necessary, and any such groups that remain incomplete at the time of room draw will be placed at the bottom of the draw automatically and will be put in a special housing lottery.  Such groups still risk being assigned an unknown roommate during the academic year in which they occupy an incomplete suite. The freshman counselors will keep available a list of students who need roommates and a list of incomplete sextets.

Available housing for Sophomores (total of 98 students):

      13 6-person suites (4 singles and 1 double with a living room) [C11, E12, I12, C21, E22, H23, I22, C31, E32, H33, I32, F41, H43]

      3 6-person suites (3 doubles with a living room) [C12, J11, C22]

      1 2-person suite (1 stand alone double) [F31]

JUNIORS

Juniors will live in either 4-person, 5-person or 9-person suites in Trumbull, and 3-person, 5-person, 6-person, or 8-person suites in McClellan Hall (our annex location) depending on the demand for on-campus housing. The dean will keep an updated list of available rooms for juniors on the TC Housing website after both senior and sophomore housing draws for a more efficient and effective junior room draw.  Remember that these arrangements may change depending on senior demand for on-campus housing.

    Housing Rules

Any and all decisions made at the draw are final, and it is your responsibility to attend the draw.  If there are extenuating circumstances that require you to miss the draw, you must designate a proxy and have this person sign the form and attend the room draw for you.

Each group will have only two minutes to choose a room.  If a group is incapable of choosing a room in the allotted time, it will be asked to wait until the end of its draw to do so.

Absolutely no switching of rooms will be allowed during room draw.  If two suites or individuals wish to exchange rooms, they may do so by contacting the Dean’s Office by 5:00 pm on the day following the draw for their class.  All members of both suites must agree to any and all switches in writing (there is a form for it).

The Committee reserves the right to expel from the room draw proceedings anyone who causes a disturbance or who otherwise disrupts the room draw.  The Committee will represent those expelled for the remainder of the draw.

Any student with a special need or a housing concern should meet with the dean well before the housing draw on Sunday night to discuss these issues.  The dean will try to accommodate these students but does not guarantee any special arrangements.

Any student who participates in the room draw and subsequently withdraws from his/her room obligation for the Fall term to move off-campus or take a leave of absence will automatically be placed at the bottom of the following year’s draw in the event he/she choose to move back on campus.  This penalty does not pertain to students who take a leave of absence in the spring or participate in a junior term abroad experience.

Anyone who participates in room draw and then decides to relinquish his/her housing in order to live off-campus or to take a leave of absence is also subject to the charges as stated in the Yale College Undergraduate Regulations.
