ACADEMICS

 

Deadline:  Midterm, March 6:  Last day to withdraw from a spring-term course without having the course appear on the transcript and last day to apply for double credit in a single-credit course.

 

Deadline: Monday, March 31: Last day to convert from Credit/D/Fail option in a spring-term course to a letter grade.

 

TUTORING
 
TC Resident Writing Tutor:  The TC Writing Tutor is Jan Simpson. Her office is in the basement of TC, room 006, and her email address is jan.simpson@yale.edu. She has regular hours, which are posted at

.  For your information, a Yale College student may seek the help and advice of any tutor in any residential college.
 
(New tutor for TC) Resident Math and Science Tutor:  The TC science tutor is Jakub Kostal.  He is a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry.  His office is in the basement of TC, room 006, his email address is jakub.kostal@yale.edu, and his schedule is available at

.  For your information, a Yale College student may seek the help and advice of any math and science tutor in any residential college, and these tutors have specialties that are noted at the web site.
 
Yale College Tutoring Program:  This tutoring program makes it possible to receive tutoring in other subjects, such as non-English languages, economics, and the sciences and mathematics.  The form to request such tutoring, which is free, is available in the TC Dean’s Office.
 
Tutoring  in Academic Departments.  Some departments provide tutoring for students taking courses in their department.  Ask your teacher or the Director of Undergraduate Studies of the department.


Tutoring in Foreign Languages:
  The process for asking for a foreign language tutor is described at  www.cls.yale.edu/tutoring .  A tutor is available to anyone enrolled in a foreign language (regardless of the grade in that course).

 

Science and QR Tutoring Program:  This tutoring program makes it possible to receive tutoring in QR and Science courses.  The form to request such tutoring is available in the TD dean’s office.

 

Course-Based Peer Tutoring.  For some courses the instructor has arranged peer tutoring by students who completed the course well, and it is announced by the instructor when such course-based tutoring is available.

Yale Librarian Emily Horning’s presentation will introduce students to library services and highlight some valuable research strategies. Her talk will touch on:

• Navigating the Yale Library homepage
• Understanding library research tools and databases
• Using the collections effectively
• Getting to know your personal librarian and other resources

AAAYA Tina E. Yeh Community Service Fellowships offer $550/wk stipends for up to 10 weeks for undergraduates, graduating seniors, and graduates to do community work to benefit Asian communities in North America.  Information and the application materials are available in the TD dean’s office. JUNIORS: LOOKING AHEAD TO POST-GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

Fulbright Grants Information Meeting, Tuesday, February 10, 7:00 pm at OFP, 55 Whitney, Room 369 (3rd floor). The Fulbright Scholarship Program offers academic-year awards to over 140 countries. Co-sponsored awards are also available at a number of partner universities in the UK. Opportunities exist worldwide for independent study, research, formal degree study, teaching English and more.  Come and learn about the program and the application/selection process.  Speakers include former Fulbright Scholars from Yale. These fellowships have an early fall campus deadline (early September), so it is important to get started now.  There will be ample time for questions.  Can’t make the meeting?  Call to schedule an appointment with Linda De Laurentis at OFP (432-8685).

Marshall, Mitchell, Rhodes, and Other Major UK Fellowships Information Meeting, Tuesday, February 17, 7:00 pm at OFP, 55 Whitney, Room 369 (3rd floor).  This meeting provides an overview of the Marshall, Mitchell, and Rhodes Scholarship programs and the application/selection processes, with information about the Churchill and Gates as well. These fellowships have deadlines beginning in the late summer, so now is the time to get started.  Meet winners of Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships from a number of disciplines. There will be ample time for questions. (Not sure you’re a good candidate for one of these fellowships, but interested in post-graduate study in the UK?  Come to this meeting or to one of the informal meetings in residential colleges, or call 432-8685 to schedule an appointment with Kate Dailinger at OFP anyway!)

These meetings will be held only once this year!
