ACADEMICS

Course Selection Reminders

A course schedule of fewer than 4 course credits and as many as 6 course credits requires my permission before the schedule is handed in. If this is your plan, see me before  the deadline for your course schedule.

Class meeting times may not overlap by more than 15 minutes and require a conversation with me, compelling academic reasons for the overlap, and a petition to the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing.

A course schedule with a course in The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences that is also not listed in the blue book or in a professional school requires an additional form, which is available in the TC Dean’s Office and at www.yale.edu/sfas/registrar/blue_form.pdf  . Hand in the completed form with your course schedule with a syllabus attached. Until that form with syllabus is submitted and processed by the registrar’s office, your record will show 0.0 credits for the course. Questions regarding the Yale College  credit value of a course in a professional school should be addressed to diane.rodrigues@yale.edu, Associate Registrar. Some courses at SOM, for instance, earn only 0.5 Yale College  credits. More information in YCPS, pages 66-67.

SUMMER

INTERNATIONAL BULLDOGS ON eRECRUITING. The UCS International Bulldogs program offerings are now posted on eRecruiting. To view listings, simply conduct a 'One Click' search. The application deadline is January 31. Check www.yale.edu/career

Summer Traveling Fellowships sponsored by Jonathan Edwards College.  Deadline: Friday, January 30, 5:00 PM.   Applications are available in J.E. Master's OfficeCompetition for the Summer Traveling Fellowships is open to juniors (or students for whom 2009 is their final summer) in Yale College who give evidence that their educational experience would be significantly enhanced by a project of independent study and/or research outside of the continental United States.  The selection committee always expects the proposals to be for independent projects, although it occasionally allows accompanying enrollment in a formal program of study (not supported by the Fellowship).  The general statement from the candidate should outline the nature of his/her project, the relevance of the travel abroad to its completion, the planned itinerary, and the arrangements made or research undertaken in advance to prepare for the travel experience.  Each project will be judged for its coherence and originality, and for its connection with the candidate’s previous educational experience and future goals.  Proposals will also be assessed according to whether the objectives of the candidate appear to be achievable within the time limits of the proposed travel, which would normally exceed one month, and whether the budget is realistic.  The selection committee normally does not fund projects that involve only performance, such as musical concerts or participation in athletic competition. Foreign students normally are not given grants for projects conducted in their home countries.

New for Summer 2009:  Summer Study Abroad  Students who wish to receive Yale College credit and/or ISA funding for summer study abroad on programs run by outside organizations/ and universities will now have an application process similar to that for study abroad during the academic year.  If you wish to receive credit and/or ISA funding you will now apply for approval prior to studying abroad in the summer.  There is an approved list of programs, and the courses will be signed off on prior to study abroad by the DUS of the relevant department.  To begin searching for approved summer programs, go to the Opportunities page of the Center for International Experience web site (http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/opportunities/index.html) and click on “Search for International Opportunities.”   Once you find the right program, you will click on the “Start Applying” button on the program’s info page.  Please remember that this online process is only for the internal Yale application process – you will still need to apply directly to your program/university of choice for admission.

Summer Abroad application deadline:  noon, Friday, April 17

Information about study abroad is also available on the Center for International Experience web site (http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/advising/type/study/index.html) .

To meet with someone about international opportunities call 2-8684 to schedule an appointment, and walk-ins are held Tuesday afternoons (2-4pm) and Thursday mornings (10am-12noon).  Weekly study abroad info meetings are conducted on Fridays at 1pm, starting January 27 to help students to get started with their study abroad planning.  The meetings will take place in Room L71 in the basement of Bass Library.  Students can find a list of all international opportunities programming at the CIE calendar (http://www.yale.edu/yalecollege/international/welcome/calendar.html).

[Note that the New Summer Abroad Program is not for students wishing to attend a Yale Summer Session program abroad, or one of the Yale-in-London summer session.  To apply for these programs, please see their listings on the CIE Opportunities page.]
