Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative
New: A new Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative (ELTI) program was recently established with the award of a $4.8 million gift from the Lisbet Rausing Charitable Fund. This program will be jointly coordinated by TRI and the Center for Tropical Forest Science of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The program will focus on the training of field workers in conservation, park managers, officials concerned with energy, infrastructure services and natural resources, and environmental policy makers and community leaders in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
Kristen Welsh was recently hired as the Program Facilitator for the ELTI program; the search for a Program Director is currently in progress.

Recent publications by TRI directors
In addition to guiding Yale Forestry students in their environmental education and supporting them in their research quests, the Tropical Resources Institute's director, Lisa Curran, and program director, Amity Doolittle, continue developing their own research interests and producing publications on matters of deep concern in the tropics.
Dr. Curran, who specializes in the structure and dynamics of tropical forests and how they are altered by human activities, was recently part of an eight-member team that studied the ecological effects of logging on the Bornean rainforests during a 16-year period ending in 2001. This project culminated in the publication of a paper in the journal Science in February 2004, entitled “Lowland Forest Loss in Protected Areas of Indonesian Borneo.” A copy of the paper and its supplemental information can be downloaded by clicking here.
Dr. Doolittle, whose research focuses on how access to natural resources are controlled by society and government, has recently released a publication on the subject in the context of her experiences and research in Southeast Asia. Property & Politics in Sabah, Malaysia: Native Struggles over Land Rights, published in 2005 by University of Washington Press, examines environmental conflicts in that region through the lens of political ecology, which seeks to understanding such issues based on how they relate to place, culture and history. She delves into the root causes of the environmental problems in that area by exposing the underlying political, economic and social forces at work.
