Carpooling
Carpooling significantly reduces or eliminates your parking costs. If you can't carpool everyday, don't worry! You will receive up to six free one-day permits per carpool per month for those days when carpooling isn't possible. In emergencies, you can take advantage of our FREE Guaranteed Ride Home program.
Looking for a carpool partner?
The university has partnered with NuRide, a carpool matching website, to help Yale community members find each other. NuRide rewards their active members with gift certificates and coupons to a huge selection of retailers and services.
Another online option for rideshare matching is GoLoco which is based on the social networking concept and provides an option for the rider to pay the driver using PayPal.
Both online options allow the user to track the reductions they achieve in greenhouse gas emissions.
Procedure
- Download and complete either a 2-person or 3+person rideshare application form to register a carpool with Yale University and fax the completed form to Transportation Options at 432-5913.
- You will be contacted within 5 business days after your application has been received as to whether or not your rideshare arrangement qualifies for participation in this program. It may take up to a month for the resulting payroll deduction change to be reflected in your paycheck.
Rates
- For a two person carpool, each participant receives a discount of 60% off their current parking rate.
- For carpools of three or more, each participant pays nothing.
Lots
- All carpool applications will be reviewed on a case by case basis and lot assignments will be determined by the parking office. Every effort will be made to assign you to the lot of your preference. To see a map of campus parking locations, click here.
Eligibility
Two Person Carpool
Carpools of two Yale employees are eligible for a 60% discount on their annual parking permit.
- Regular full-time and part-time Yale employees are eligible for participation in the 2-person carpool benefit
- Casual Employees are NOT eligible for this benefit
- Carpools must make directional sense. You may be asked to explain your route
Expanding Carpools: Increase your two-person carpool by one or more permit-holding Yale employees to qualify for free parking.
Each member of the carpool will receive 3 free one day parking permits per month to use as necessary.
Three (or more) Person Carpool
Effective October 2008, carpools and vanpools of three or more Yale employees are eligible for free parking.
All new 3+ person carpools must meet the following conditions:
- At least three members must be regular full-time or part-time Yale employees. Casual Employees are NOT eligible for this benefit
- At least three members of the carpool must currently hold a parking permit for a Yale lot or garage that they have held for at least six months, with the following exceptions:
- New Employees: One or all members of the 3-person carpool can be new employees who have worked at Yale for a period of time not exceeding their probationary period.
- Expanding Carpools: Two-person carpools that expand by one or more Yale employees, at least one of whom has been paying for parking at Yale for six months.
- Carpools must make directional sense. You may be asked to explain your route
- At least three members of the carpool will commit to carpooling everyday with the exception of the days they use their free one-day parking permits.
- Each three-person carpool will receive 6 one day parking permits per month for collective use.
Try it! Make the commitment as long as it works for you. You may terminate the carpool at any time and every effort will be made to assign you to the lot of your preference. Remember, you will return to paying full price for your annual parking permit once your carpool is terminated.
