Subject Areas for Secondary School Certificate
There are two ways to meet the academic requirements for an English certificate:
• Yale requirements for a major in English
• OR A total of 10 English courses and 3 courses in a related area
The first way is outlined in the Yale College Program of Study.
The second way is often available to non-English majors and involves courses from American Studies, Film Studies, Humanities, German Studies, Linguistics, Literature, and Theater Studies. Consultation with the Director will determine acceptable courses.
Summer courses at an accredited college are counted toward this subject area.
There are a variety of ways to meet the academic requirements for a History/Social Studies certificate. Note that this is a combined certificate; courses must be in both History and the Social Sciences.
• Yale requirements for a major in History, plus 6 courses in any of the Social Sciences
• OR Meeting all the Yale requirements for a major in Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, or Sociology, plus 6 courses in history (one must be U.S. History)
• OR An interdisciplinary major that includes a total of 13 courses in History and the Social Sciences. Distribution must be as follows: a minimum of 6 history courses (at least one U.S. History, one Western or European, one non-Western); and among the Social Sciences, one in Economics, one in Political Science, one in Psychology
Interdisciplinary majors include: African American Studies, American Studies, Ethics, Politics and Economics, and Ethnicity, Race and Migration. Others may be accepted with the approval of the Director.

There are two ways to meet the academic requirements for a Mathematics certificate:
• Yale requirements for a major in Mathematics
• OR A total of 10 math or mathematics-based courses
The first path is outlined in the Yale College Program of Study.
The second path is open to non-math majors who have completed course work in Computer Science, Economics (macro and other math based courses), Physics (with calculus) and Statistics. Some finance courses may also be accepted. In addition, AP credits also fulfill the requirement. It is important to meet with the Director to determine the courses that meet the requirements.

Science certificates offered: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Science.
There are two ways to meet the academic requirements for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics certificate:
• Yale requirements for a major in the subject
• OR A total of 10 courses in the subject with three related Science courses
The first way is outlined in the Yale College Program of Study.
The second way is available to non-subject majors.
There is one way to meet the academic requirements for a General Science certificate:
•A total of 13 courses with a distribution that includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics

The world language certificates offered: French and Spanish
There are two pathways to meet the academic requirements for a world language certificate:
• Yale requirements for a major in the language
• OR A total of 9 courses in the language
The first path is outlined in the Yale College Programs of Study.
The second is available to non-language majors.

The certificate in Music is a K-12 endorsement. Candidates must be able to work in either elementary or secondary school settings.

• OR A total of 10 courses in music and 3 related courses

The second way is available to non-music majors.
