Secondary Certificate (Grades 7-12)

The Secondary Certificate Program is open to Yale undergraduates, Yale graduate students, and non-degree post-BA students.

Program Requirements:

  1. Content Coursework
    • A major in the subject you want to teach
    • or 10 courses in the subject you want to teach and 3 courses in related subjects.
    • See the requirements for your subject: Connecticut Certification Requirements
  2. US History course (minimum 50 year timespan)
    • Courses are available through the History, African American Studies, and American Studies departments. If you are unsure whether a certain course fulfills the requirement, check with the Director.
  3. Education Coursework (8 credits)
    • TPRP 190a, Schools, Community and the Teacher.
    • TPRP 199b, Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools.
    • TPRP 194a, Educational Psychology.
    • TPRP 195b, Issues in Special Education.
    • TPRP 290-296a, Methods of Teaching (in your subject area).
    • TPRP 299a or b, Student Teaching. 3 credits.
  4. Student Teaching
    • Student teaching takes place off-campus at a selected public secondary school under the supervision of the university supervisor and an experienced and qualified classroom teacher. Student teaching is done during your senior year. Most elect to student teach in the spring, but it may be done in the fall.

  1. One-year plan: This allows for the transition into teaching in one academic year, and assumes that you have already completed all the required content coursework.
