Admissions and Enrollment

Yale Undergraduates:

Because state certification requires specific courses, we advise students who are interested in teaching to talk through their options early on in their time at Yale. Students should call the program office at 432-4631 and set up a time to meet with the Director as early as the end of freshman year.

Formal enrollment takes place at the end of the sophomore year. Enrollment packets are due by the Friday before Reading Period in the spring, and the packets are emailed to students two weeks before that. Interested students should contact the program office at 432-4631 and have an initial meeting with the Director. We encourage all interested students to enroll even if they are only exploring their options. Because the program is sequential and begins in the Fall of junior year, students may not elect to enroll after junior schedules are due in the Fall.

The program also provides guidance about teaching and options after graduation: pursuing certification, alternate programs such as Teach for America, or graduate school. We can advise you on specific courses taken in the senior year which may enhance post-graduate teaching opportunities.

Yale Graduate Students: Secondary Certificate Only

Admission to the Teacher Preparation Joint Program with Yale Graduate Schools is a three step process:

  1. A meeting with the Director to discuss a possible course of study.
  2. Approval of that course of study by the candidate’s graduate department.
  3. Completion of an application which includes two short essays, original transcripts, a recommendation, and a formal interview.

Non-Degree Post-B.A. Applicants: Secondary Certificate Only

Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program is a three step process:

  1. Candidates set up an initial meeting with the Director of the Teacher Preparation Program to explore program requirements and candidate qualifications. Moving forward in the admission process depends on the outcome of this meeting.
  2. Candidates apply to become a Non-Degree Student through the Undergraduate Admissions Office. The Admissions Office determines a candidate's qualifications, which involves a full application process. Professional work and other educational experiences since graduation are taken into account. The deadline is June 1.
  3. If admitted by the Undergraduate Admissions Office, candidates meet again with the Director of the Teacher Preparation Program. Candidates submit the Teacher Prep enrollment packet, which consists of a completed information sheet, original transcripts, one letter of recommendation, and two short essays.

Candidates will be admitted on the basis of their qualifications and space availability. Please note that the only program available to Post-B.A. candidates is the Secondary Certificate. An average of 4-6 candidates are admitted each year, with priority going to candidates in Mathematics, Science and Spanish.

Tuition for Non-Degree students for the 2009-2010 academic year is $4,000.00 per course (3 credits). There is no Yale financial aid available for the Non-Degree Student Program, and financial aid eligibility is limited to funds provided by the federal government and supplemental loan programs available through private lenders. More information for Non-Degree Students is available from the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
