The New Journal publishes five, 48-page issues per year, with a distribution of 7,500 per issue. Our poignantly-reported features and snappy shorter pieces cover New Haven and the University with a rigor that no other publication at Yale can match. You can't have forgotten the magazine's meticulous editing process-from sweeping changes in A-reads to grammatical tweaks in C's to painstaking corrections in flats. At our next reunion, writers may recall the present era in the history of the magazine as a time of innovation. Recent e-boards have encouraged writers to experiment with voice and structure; the result has been a magazine that is not only rich in content, but stylish and superbly crafted. The New Journal takes seriously the job of making things new.

As always, our work pays off. In addition to garnering abundant praise from students, professors, and local residents, The New Journal and its writers have received awards from The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, and the Yale English Department--more awards than any other publication on campus. The illustrious internships and jobs that New Journalers have been awarded as undergraduates and afterwards speak to the caliber of student that our organization attracts. But while our vibrancy and creativity have flourished, over the past few years practical issues have come to threaten our future. Outside funding opportunities and desktop publishing have inundated Yale with start-up publications that compete for readership and ad dollars. Few of them last, but they are there. In recent years, the most we have ever had in the bank is $28,000. We are well below that amount now, and when revenue doesn't come in it threatens the stability of the magazine. In the face of these financial difficulties, we have been forced to entertain the possibility of shortening issues, compromising news for cost. We're not willing to make that compromise. Nor do we wish to fund ourselves through our alumni. TNJ always has and always will run ads. These advertisements forge a relationship between our staff and the community outside of Yale's walls. But fundraising and creative investments can ensure that future generations of New Journalers continue to do what we do best.

You can make a difference to the future of The New Journal.

When TNJ was founded four decades ago, its mission was clear: to report on a University and a city as they entered a new era of development and progress. Over the years, that philosophy has made an impact on generations of Yale students, faculty, and citizens of New Haven. Then and now, the magazine prided itself on printing stories that were excellently reported, written, and edited. Your tax-deductible contributions will be used to ensure that TNJ can continue to fulfill this legacy as the finest magazine on campus. Your donation will be allocated to a fund maintaining the day-to-day operations of the publication.
