Video and audio teaching materials can be made available to students in several forms. Traditionally, this might involve placing a videocassette or audiocassette on reserve in a library, or creating a compilation of multimedia materials for manual distribution. A rather recent technology known as streaming can be used to deliver audio and/or video over the internet using web-based technologies. The material is first digitized, and the resulting computer file is converted to streaming format and uploaded to a server. Anyone with an appropriately configured web browser can access the file and view/listen to it on their computer. Examples of streaming media created at Yale can be viewed at http://info.med.yale.edu/artdemo/. For more information, contact the staff of Instructional Computing Services. The Library-ITS Faculty Support Grant Program has, for the last 3 years, sponsored faculty projects that explore the use of IT in the teaching and learning process. A summary of the 1998-1999 awards can be seen at http://www.library.yale.edu/Administration/FacultySupport/recip98.html. This program has recently undergone a review, and an announcement of a successor program will appear early in 1999. Stay tuned for details!
