Students and faculty using the Phelps Classroom this semester would have observed that Academic Computing Services recently replaced all of the Power Macintosh 6115 computers with new, state of the art Macintosh G3 computers and 17" monitors. This 24-seat electronic classroom is popular with courses across the disciplines, including Spanish, Mathematics, Music, and Linguistics. An instructor machine at the front of the room can be used as a source for the in-house large screen projection and audio systems, enabling the instructor to display electronic slide presentations, web pages, or specialized computer-based teaching material such as simulations and interactive software. Several features of the new installation offer interesting opportunities for instructors, according to Anne Kelsey, the ACS Macintosh specialist who supports the classroom. "The installation of specialized, high-speed networking software allows the instructor to monitor the work being done by students on their individual computers, and select any individual station for display to the class." Another innovation is Virtual PC, software (to be available in 1999) that "converts" the machines into Microsoft Windows-based computers. As a consequence, the room can be used for classes that require either Macintosh or PC-based instructional software.
