Yale Institute of International Studies, the only research center of its kind in the world, is established. Organized within the Graduate School, it supported faculty research in foreign affairs and created the first interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Yale. Today, the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies is a focal point for encouraging interdisciplinary, international, and area-focused research and teaching. It offers eight undergraduate majors and four master’s degree programs, focusing on 10 world regions and oversees twenty-three interdisciplinary faculty councils, centers, committees, and programs.
