Payne Whitney Gymnasium, the largest indoor athletic facility in the world, is completed. Recent renovations and additions have assured its status as one of the world’s grandest athletic complexes, deserving of its nickname, the “Cathedral of Sweat.” Yale now offers thirty-five varsity sports as well as recreational athletics for students, faculty, and staff. Over 70 percent of Yale College students participate in intercollegiate or intramural athletics.
