One of the first academic programs in public health in the country is founded. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine has played a pivotal role in addressing central public health issues. In the 1920s the Department was a catalyst in the reform of public health both nationally and in Connecticut. The Department’s founders started a tradition of community outreach that continues today around the world through the work of faculty, students, and alumni on topics ranging from the AIDS pandemic to bioterrorism, and from cancer prevention to protection of the environment.
