Yung Wing is the first Chinese man to be awarded a degree (B.A.) from an American university. Today, over 1,700 students come to Yale from outside the United States. Ernesto Zedillo (Ph.D. 1981), President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000, and Yoriko Kawaguchi (M.Phil. 1972), who served as Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2004, are recent examples of Yale alumni who have become influential leaders in their native countries.
