Many of the TIES schools receive funding from the county to run an Extended Day Academy -- enrichment classes offered to kids at no charge to keep them off the streets after school. Instead of (or in addition to) tutoring, you may be interested in team-teaching your own after-school elective. The program usually runs for one hour, two or three days a week for about six weeks. Curricula can be either academically or non-academically oriented (teach them better writing or about medieval knights), but they must be feasible and exciting enough to keep elementary school kids in school an extra, optional hour. Obviously, this aspect of TIES is a tremendous opportunity to get real hands-on teaching experience. But keep in mind that it also entails a much heavier commitment, both during the program and outside of it.

If you are interested in this, email the program directors with your college, email, phone number, and any specific questions about the program as soon as possible, and we'll get you set up.
