How large is Yale's endowment?

Yale's endowment totaled $11.0 billion on June 30, 2003, a significant increase from the previous fiscal year-end total of $10.5 billion, Yale's Investments Office reports.

For the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2003, Yale earned an 8.8% return on its endowment investments.

University officials noted that the return rate was a remarkable achievement in a period when U.S. and international stock markets were flat and most endowments failed to earn more than a few percentage points of investment return.

University officials noted that the return rate was a remarkable achievement in a period when U.S. and international stock markets posted double-digit declines and the average endowment generated negative investment returns.

During the last 10 years, Yale's annual return on its Endowment investments averaged 18.3%, as Endowment funds grew from $2.6 billion to $10.7 billion.

Spending from the Endowment for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2002 is expected to total approximately $405 million, a 20% increase over Endowment spending in the prior fiscal year.

The Endowment's contribution equals 28% of the University's revenues, over two times the share of the operating budget support it provided a decade ago.
