Yale's only cello-rock group
|
Breaking out of the classical cello repertoire and venturing into the realm of classic rock and pop, Low Strung performs concerts that are characterized by sweeping, innovative arrangements of tunes by Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Coldplay, the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Eagles, U2, AC/DC and many more. Using the incredible versatility of the cello to extraordinary effect, these cellists bring a unique and exciting sound to rock classics, heavy metal favorites, and pop tunes. Performing with as many as twelves cellists at a time, Low Strung is unique and unforgettable. |

History: In 2004, the cello section of the Saybrook College Orchestra went above and beyond the typical pre-concert sectional to form its own independent chamber group. Rehearsals, though still echoing the resonance of Mozart's 40th or Beethoven's 7th, began to be distinguished by chords from Metallica, the Beatles, and Aerosmith. The energized and charismatic group continues to diversify its repertoire, adapting well-known pop and rock tunes to the voices of nine cellos. Through the support and generosity of the Trumbull College Sudler Fund, Low Strung presented its first concert in April 2005 to a full house, quickly establishing itself as one of the most exciting musical groups on campus. The group's success has continued to this day with performances in Dwight Chapel and the Saybrook Dining Hall, as well as midnight performances in courtyards and on Cross Campus. Low Strung has also toured in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, and Massachusetts. Low Strung released its first CD in May of 2007, and the self-titled album can be found on iTunes and CD Baby Auditions: Although it has a historical affiliation with the Saybrook College Orchestra, Low Strung has both expanded its membership and established itself as an independent group and welcomes auditions from all cellists on campus. Auditions for the 2008-2009 school year will be held in early September. For more information, please contact Sam Brickman Raredon or María de León .
