Audition Information

The Saybrook College Orchestra welcomes all Yale-affiliated musicians to audition for membership, whether undergraduate, graduate, alumni, faculty, or staff. The orchestra remains, however, predominantly composed of undergraduates from all of Yale’s twelve residential colleges.

Auditions for the 2006-7 season will be held on Monday, September 4th and Tuesday, September 5th. We encourage everyone with an interest in the orchestra to audition. Instrument specific audition information is below. Prepared excerpts are not required for any instrument.

You may contact us to schedule an audition at syorchestra@yale.edu or by visiting our table at the Freshman Bazaar on Sunday, September 3rd.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at syorchestra@yale.edu (also, please see our FAQ).

Strings:
Please come with a prepared solo piece that you feel best demonstrates your ability on your instrument. You should be prepared with a slow and a fast passage. The audition may also include sightreading.

Winds and Brass:
Please come with a prepared solo piece with contrasting sections (slow/lyrical and fast). You will also be asked to sightread a short passage.

Percussion:
If you would like to audition on a percussion instrument, please contact us by email.

Harp:
Please prepare a solo piece of your choosing, that demostrates technique and fingerspeed, as well as musicality. Sightreading will not be required. Special arrangements will be made to accommodate your harp's location for the audition.

Piano/Celeste:
Keyboard auditions will be held Wednesday, September 6th. Please come prepared with a solo piece of your choosing. You will also be asked to sightread a short piece.
