As WISAY (Women and Gender Minorities in Science at Yale), we are dedicated to promoting the interests of female, transgender, and non-binary scientists and advocating for gender equality in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  Our community is welcoming not only to women and gender minorities at Yale, but to everyone who is interested in promoting gender equality in science and research.

Historically, only a small fraction of science degrees were awarded to women, but in recent decades women’s overall participation in STEM fields has steadily increased. Today, women earn half of all bachelor’s degrees in science.  The involvement of women and gender minorities in advanced study and careers in STEM fields continues to grow. However, women and gender minorities are still underrepresented in many STEM fields and face significant challenges at the highest levels of these professions.

WISAY seeks to help overcome these disparities by supporting women at all career levels through our four main goals:

  • Advocacy/awareness
  • Mentoring
  • Networking/community building
  • Career development

WISAY is a group of over 500 undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. It was founded in 1999 by three graduate students who wanted to create a forum for women in all disciplines of science. WISAY creates a campus-wide network of scientists across many scientific disciplines and provides the opportunity for Yale scientists to meet with leading women scientists from Yale and around the country.
