The 2001 - 2002 Season

Women's Record:  13 - 1  6 - 1 IVY

4 Year Record:  34 - 11 - 1

The Yale women concluded one of their most successful seasons in recent memory finishing with a dual meet record of 13 - 1 (6 - 1 IVY) and a fourth place (605) at IVY's.  The meets was hosted by 3rd place finisher Harvard (655).  Princeton (706) defended its title for the 4th consecutive year narrowly defeating Brown (691).

Yale's Susan Cooke's hard work all season paid off as she won 3 events (200/400 IM, 200 Breststroke), Qualified for NCAA's, broke 2 University records and qualified for Senior Nationals.  Susan became the 2nd Yalie in as many years to receive the Ivy League "Swimmer of the Year" award following Meredith Bryarly '01.

The Yale record books were rewritten once again this season.  The Yale women of 2000 - 2001 broke 7 University records.  The 2001 - 2002 version was equal to the task establishing 7 new marks of their own this season.  Distance ace Heidi Kraus swam (10:01.83) in the 1,000 besting Suzanne Heizer's (10:03.65) from 1993.  Heidi's effort, was also her 1st senior national time standard.   Another rookie to be seen at Nationals this summer will be Daphna Shafir.  Daphna finished 2nd in the 200 butterfly (2:01.97) eclipsing the (2:03.01) Jen Renzi swam in 1994.

Often times we refer to our program as the Yale Swimming and Diving Team.  However after performances that were witnessed this past season we may refer to ourselves as the Yale Diving and Swimming Team!  The quartet of Bates Gregory '03, Emily Cardy '04, Kathleen McKeon '04 and Melanie Loftus '05 surpassed everyone's expectations this season.  Emily and Bates provide an almost automatic 1 - 2 combination at every dual meet.  They both qualified for the NCAA Championship by placing in the top 2 at the NCAA Regional Diving Meet.  They traded school records back and forth all season, with Melanie breaking Bates records on both the one (290.85) and three (319.05) meter boards, as well as establishing a 10 meter platform record (362.65) for the very first time.

With only 100 points separating Yale from the Ivy League Championship and only 2 seniors lost to graduation we are working each day with renewed confidence knowing that a Championship is within our grasp.  And as Yalies our women now have a little more incentive to strive for a championship.  This past winter the Ivy League named the Championship Trophy in honor of our own Frank Keefe!
